Competency is the blend of what someone knows, can do, and how they behave in work situations to perform well. It isn’t just facts (knowledge) or raw skill (ability) alone; it’s the integrated capability that translates knowledge and skills into effective job performance. A server, for example, demonstrates competency when they understand the menu, handle a tray safely, communicate clearly with guests, manage timing, and adapt to different guest needs in a positive way. Those combined abilities and behaviors, tied to successful performance, define competency.

Knowledge describes information someone holds, and ability is the capacity to perform tasks, but neither by itself fully captures how those elements work together on the job. Expertise refers to a high level of mastery in a specific area, which is a form of advanced skill, but the broader idea of competency covers the full package of knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to perform well in a role.
